Dear Prasanna,
Christian legend has it that St Thomas, who was on a mission to gain
converts to Christianity, was met by a Jewish congregation that had arrived there
during the Syrian Diaspora. St Thomas' mission was very successful as judged by
the surnames one encounters in Kerala such as Thomas, John, Mathew, Paul and
so on, and the Syriac Christian Church which had a real presence for
centuries. I was told that the Jewish population was augmented during the Spanish
Inquisition but since the founding of Israel has dwindled and that there has
been a melding of various Christian sects in the last few decades. I could go
on about Kerala which I visited in the 80's and found fascinating,
Bob
