John,
  Basically, all that does is make it so that the future CT surgeon  merely 
goes through the paces of the general surgery residency.  He  completes his 5 
years and moves on to cardiothoracic residency no matter  what.  What a farce!  
I can't tell you the untold hours I spent  reading Schwartz, journals, and 
whatever I could get my hands on as a  general surgery resident, knowing that I 
had to excel on the In Training Exam if  I was going to beat the pyramid. We 
went from 10 interns to 4 chiefs at the Univ  of Maryland and I was the only 
one from out of state who survived the cut.   Let me tell you, those first 
couple of years were scary as heck, because I new  that I could easily end up as an 
anesthesiologist or ER doc.
