I don't know how everyone else decided to go into our field, but I didn't know what I wanted to do until my 5th general surgery year. (Sometimes I still don't know what I want to do.) Most of my fellow trainees in Colorado came to Colorado to be involved in liver transplantation (Starzl was our chairman), but not one ended up pursuing that route. Twenty interns started, and 6 chief residents finished in my class - 3 went into CT surgery, two plastics, one general surgery.
