I am sure there are a few anecdotes re: Starr-Edwards valves, where  
the principle of complete detachment from occluder and housing made  
for an ideal situation in the prevention of thrombosis.

I just found out that a 52 year old male who had a mitral valve  
replacement with a S-E valve at age 8, subsequently had a aortic  
valve replacement in 1994, when the S-E was left untouched as it  
appeared pristine on direct visualization.  He went on to sufer a  
couple of MI's in 2006 due to embolization from the S-E ball, which  
in the interim had swollen and cracked, creating nidus for thrombi  
that embolized his normal coronary arteries.

He is now 4 months post-op from a MVR with removal of the S-E valve  
and recovering well.

In summary, this patient's original S-E valve lasted 43 years in the  
mitral position.

Just an anecdote.
