Dave,
  Since the pericardial cavity was full of blood at the time of  initial 
exploration, I can't imagine that this aorta won't soon blow.  The  fact that he's 
confused means little.  Lots of patients would be crazy  after such an 
insult.  As long as he moves everything, I would bet that his  confusional state 
will eventually resolve.  I would recommend surgery  ASAP.
