When I was writing my last email and googling for # of acute MIs in the US, most of the early hits were linked to the association of MI with Vioxx. One would think that there is an epidemic of MIs caused by Vioxx. It used to be that a little knowledge was a dangerous thing. Now a lot of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Actually there is almost no knowledge anymore just information, and we aren't helping much.

Subject: [HSF] Aprotinin...again
I was wondering if anyone has read the new Mangano paper? It appears that regardless of veracity or scientific accuracy it will inflict a major, if not irreversible blow on the use of this agent. We have had 3 patients calling today wanting to know if they received the drug and I am sure there will be numerous more. Although I have been a strong believer in aprotinin for years, I have a sad feeling that its end may be nigh except in the complex high risk case.
I suspect that this paper has all the flaws of the first, I will read it myself and find out, but the suggestion that patients are at increased risk of dying up to five years later is one few patients will ignore.
