Many years ago there was a small little hospital in a rundown part of the Bronx. All the doctors in NY had been sent a flyer asking them to nominate doctors for a directory of the "Best Doctors of New York" This was supposedly going to be a transparently democratically derived opinion of the doctors of New York. Who better than another doctor to give you the name of the best doctor (apart from himself) in his field? A trio of doctors in this hospital went around to all the other doctors in their hospital and asked for their votes. In the directory that was eventually on sale this little hospital was distinguished by having THREE of the best doctors in NY in their specialty!

Sorry, Michael. I got the same thing, so it can't be all that much
of an honor. It is very similar to the money making schemes at
"Who's Who." They go through this extended phone interview, and, at
the end, you are asked to buy your entry into the publication. You
are also able to buy representations of you entry in the form of
plaques, etc. Its a pretty good way to make money for the publishers
by stoking the egomaniacal flames of competitive over-achievers.
Moms and Dads would love it though.
