There are several reasons why waiting a few days before pulling out the
catheter is logical. The tissues around the catheter track will firm up a bit in
time making pressure more effective. A little fibrin clot may form on the
endothelium that could act as a valve as the catheter is withdrawn. It might be
useful to put a guide wire through the catheter and if there is bleeding as the
catheter is removed, another could be inserted to control the situation while an
operation is done or could be used for insertion of one of the vascular
closure devices. One should not just yank out the catheter without having a
contingency plan. John Flege
