Gabi,
The book you mention is "Das Jahrhundert der Chirurgen", Ed Knaur, 1972, by
Jürgen Thorwald.
I have it from a patient I operated in 1991. I read only the chapters about
Billroth and Rehn ( what a bias!). The Rehn history is phantastic, he went
first to Rome 1895 and looked at a surgeon called Vecchio during the 11
International medicine Congress there, performing wounds in dog hearts and
afterwards sewing them with survival.

Roberto, check out "Das Weltreich der Chirurgen" by Juergen Thorwald. It
was a big success...and describes some of these things. Carrell etc....
