This angle was important in the early days, in fact I think I talked about it in my thesis; the point was that if the angle was not broad enough, the cage of the Starr or other ball valves could make contact with the septum, and, we thought , produce ventricular arrythmias. In truth there were many other causes of ventricular arrhythmias given the way we did our operations but it was nice to give them a mechanical explanation. It stimulated the design of valves with low profiles,
