Yes there will be effects from a projection into the flow path. Acceleration
of flow followed by vortices and slowing of flow is what produces effects:
acceleration of flow over a projection may damage red cells or activate
platelets. The slowing of flow gives time for actvated platelets to form aggregates
with fibrin. This phenomenon can take place at the edge of the housing or
along the edge of a leaflet as well as at the hinge area.. Note the fact that
there is hemolysis (at a low level) in all pyrolytic carbon valves. I will
eventually get some comparative data together

about resultant
turbulence due to projections in the flow stream ? ... any significance? any
effects?
