[HSF] On pump beating heart

I do not konw in what context the content of Hal's email is about. However, the meetings in Buffalo, both on OPCAB and ventriculectomy, were stimulating and well attended. For those who attended, most of what was said on OPCAB came to pass, from the LAST operation, to complete revascularization via median sternotomy, to new and innovative methods of exposure of the lateral arteries of the heart such as the LIMA suture, and later on new technology such as suction cup and stabilizers. The masterful presentations of leaders such as Enio Buffalo, Calafiore, Benetti and others made those events possible. The Batista operation, ventriculectomy, raised awareness of new methods to treat heart failure and dilated cardiomyopathy, forming the basis for some of other developments of recent time.

Our specialty has moved in a new and innovative directions. Some do not want to change and want to continue performing surgery as they learn during their training years. Others want to join this train, that continues to move at a fast pace, with innovations and new technology far beyond what I could have predicted a few years ago. I continue to want to be in that train, and continue to dream about new methods of making heart surgery safer and easier.

The importance of all of this is that we have almost created a new specialty, with innovativ e technology.During STS and AATS meetings, what I enjoy most, is to see what are being shown in the exhibits, as I can almost predict what is in the program of the society's meeting. \\\

Tomas

Ben,
Yes, Ben, I'll be intently watching this masterful display and trying to
remember if it was similar to Salerno's OPCAB meeting I attended in Buffalo,
NY in August, 2000. Truthfully, surgeons doing these presentations should
have more than just the ability to pay the company producing the event.
