Bob,
  Thank you for, once again, sharing your vast experience.  It is  imperative 
that we do everything possible to minimize brain damage during  cardiac 
surgery.  That is why, like you, all the bubbles are gone before I  remove the 
aortic vent.  Not waiting is simply the surgeon being impatient  to get the case 
done.  
  Along the same lines, that is why I liberally use Embol-X cannulas  when I 
think the odds of particulate emboli are high.  Personally, I'm not  going to 
wait around for years before its efficacy is demonstrated.  The  fact that 
I've seen some sizable particles in those screens that I surely  wouldn't want 
going to my patient's brains is good enough for me.
