I have continued to be a proponent of the Ross procedure and have done well
over 100 over the past ten years with excellent results. I have done six
over the past three months and last week did two on one day, one being on a 39yo
male medical malpractice trial lawyer who came here from another state after
considerable research about all his options and all the players. Both are
doing well. My experience has been very gratifying with the Ross despite all
the controversy and in fact I told the lawyer that if he didn't want people
to question his decision he should go with the Magna valve, his second choice,
as he will hear many opinions against the Ross but after a lengthy preop
discussion over the Internet, the phone and in person he wanted to go with the
Ross. To combat dilatation of the autograft I have put it inside a Hemashield
dacron graft and to combat allograft stenosis have selected only very young
donors. So far these methods have worked well. In appropriate age groups I
offer a tissue valve (Biocor or Magna), mechanical (On-X), Allograft (for
infected annulus) or the Ross and let the patient decide after a lengthy
discussion of the respective advantages and disadvantages of each.
