Just a complete confirmation of Prasanna's comment on this subject. I never cut out the shelf because I was scared that it would weaken the wall. While in infants the tissues were often supple enough to bring the descending aorta up under the arch an create a wide open anastamosis, older patients with stiffer tissues and a long narrowing were much better corrected with a patch than an end to end under tension. I used some Goretex but mostly pericardium. In both cases the patch  was oversized to allow for growth.

Vipin - recurrent pseudoaneurysm was associated with excision of the 
coarctation shelf and incidentally the BCH data of patching with Goretex did 
not lead to a higher pseudoaneurysm formation (which incidentally does not 
occur at the patch but in the aortic wall opposite to the patch.This should 
also be extendable to traumatic patching
