AIDS survival determinants differ from country to country, depending on the
availability of the latest drug cocktails, age at diagnosis, clinical
presentation, presence of KS or candidiasis, experience of the ID doc that
takes care of the patient, and presence of HLA haplotypes of rapid disease
progression (HLA-A1-Cw7-B8-DR3-DQ2 e HLA-A11-Cw4-B35-DR1-DQ1). Low CD 4
counts , CMV retinitis and early CMV disease, Mycobacterium avium complex
disease and P carinii pneumonia are also associated with a worsened
prognosis.
Median survival in the literature ranges from 14 months with less
experienced docs to 26 months with the most experienced docs.
Were I a surgeon, I would operate the guy. May be with a perfect valve his
CD4 counts can raise a bit. You know, heart failure has an inhibitory effect
upon immune system.
