It amazes me in this discussion and also at international meetings how surgeons practising in North America tend to see things from their (north american) perspective and expect others to do the same. This is well seen in international meetings by the usage of North American abbreviations and medical slang. I used to think CMS was some hospital official till I came to the USA. Now the assumption is that everyone should know who this Stark fellow is.
This is an international forum and while the worldwide readership may know who George Bush is and possibly have opinions on his actions, discussing internal US politics in an international forum is surely out of place? What business does a cardiac surgeon in asia, europe, africa, south america or australia have with what by the sounds of it is a third rate local politician? It would be like Prassana and Sukumar having a heated debate on this forum over a local indian politician, or rival indian political parties, over a controversial statement in the indian parliament.
We could rename the forum Heart Surgery Forum of USA and alienate all non-US members, but until then maybe it is best we respect the international membership of HSF and either restrict or minimize discussions on regional or national matters or at least help the non-North American memebership understand how the discussion pertains to heart surgery, healthcare or, if neither, how and why it should be of relevance to the non-North American readership.
