They certainly did. We wanted the valve to lasr for the life expectancy of  
the patient.
At the first conference in 1960 I made the statement "The valve must last  
for the life of the patient"
The cynics laughed and said "You will have no problem meeting that  
requirement: when your valve breaks the patient will die".
