I think these studies and results are going to become more common..... the
closer and closer ties with industry, the financial and other incentives,
reputations, frequent flier miles, etc that are at stake will further bring
to light to any and all biases. It is interesting that in a study (not any
in particular - but more the lingo) that shows, after looking at thousands
of patients the results show Drug A is associated with a 0.5% complication
rate vs 1.0% is called 50% better and ergo. We will be reading more and
more about these studies in the Times, WSJ, CNN than in the medical
literature - in part that is where the news is
There needs to be a little reality testing - the scientific method, process,
and review process areclearly tranished by the hoopla and shell games that
are played out. There is too much at stake these days - and we are all
guilty to some degree.
