Face it, Bob. 
In the present days of certification for MIDCADs and conscious sedation, who is going to be able to do mitral repairs from the left chest. Our profession makes as much sense as Alice found in Wonderland. So we keep doing what everone else does, so no one will notice that we are all crazy.

The complete cardiac surgeon should should have at his/her command Left,  
Right  and Center, Top and Bottom ways of getting at anything. Right  
Thoracotomies are great for the mitral. You have to adjust your ways of getting  air out 
(CO2 very useful) and putting pacer wires on
