The European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) has just released guidelines on anticoagulation and antithrombosis before and after cardiac surgery - this may give you some 'legality' to support local practice change if you are unhappy about being forced to use warfarin.
The guidelines make recommendations on a very wide range of practice issues, ranging from if and when to stop aspirin, plavix, use of hepcon to guide heparinisation and reversal, use of antifibrinolytics, factor vii, use of antiplatelet drugs post cardiac surgery etc. Also discussed is anticoagulation after valve surgery. For the aortic position the guidelines say evidence does not support the use of warfarin after bioprosthetic valve and this practice may be harmful. For the mitral position they state that there is no evidence supporting or refuting the use of warfarin after bioprosthetic valve.
The article is available online through pubmed and the european journal though not yet available in print.
